ELO is a rating that indicates a player’s skill level in games similar to chess. For example, if Player A has 100 fewer ELO points than Player B, Player B is expected to win about two-thirds of the time. The system is exponential, so larger differences have a bigger impact: a 400-point gap means the higher-rated player will win roughly 90% of the time.
The ELO system is precise and well-established. Here, it allows the AI’s difficulty to adjust smoothly in steps of 100 points, so players can find an opponent that matches their skill level. This prevents games from being too easy or too hard and provides finer control than traditional “easy,” “medium,” or “hard” settings.
